9-1-1 Emergency Calls
This number is reserved specifically for emergencies. “Police, Fire or Ambulance?” will be the first question the call taker will ask of you. Remain calm and speak clearly. Identify which emergency service you require and be prepared to provide information about what is happening, what is the location, what is your name, address and telephone number.
What is an emergency and when do I use 911? Any situation where the safety of people or property are at risk. A working fire, serious motor vehicle collision and a medical emergency are all 911 call emergencies.
If your complaint is not an emergency, do not use 911. Examples of non-emergency/not 911 calls are lost or stolen property, non-life threatening motor vehicle collisions and information supplied to police.
Teach your children about 9-1-1
- Teach them how to get help in an emergency
- Teach your children their address and telephone number and keep them by the phone
- Teach your children about the dangers of prank 9-1-1 calls.
What are the dangers of 9-1-1 prank calls ?
- Prank calls are a waste of time for emergency personnel, as a real emergency could be taking place elsewhere
Important - Police, Fire, and Ambulance need you to regularly check your house number or rural number (green number sign at end of driveway): Is the sign situated in clear view? Is it facing the right direction so it reflects light easily? Please help the emergency workers help you…if they cannot see your number, they can’t reach you as quick as you would like.
