Do you think adding a volunteer peacekeeping unit to the Service would work in the UCCM service area?
Yes
No
Not sure

1. What does U.C.C.M. mean?

United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin

2. What does "Anishnaabe" mean ?

The true meaning of word 'Anishnaabe' is derived from the creation story of the Anishnabek people, which can only be best understood and appreciated by hearing this story directly for yourself - we enourage you not to pass up on such an opportunity...

3. How long has the U.C.C.M. Anishnaabe Police Services been in existence ?

The police service was formally created in October 1995 with its first tripartite funding agreement between the U.C.C.M., the Federal government (as represented by Emergency Preparedness Canada), and the Provincial government (as represented by the Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional Services). Prior to this date, there were First Nations Constables who were pre-assigned to U.C.C.M. communities through the O.P.P. administered First Nations policing program.  These officers then transferred to the U.C.C.M. Anishnaabe Police Service in October 1995.

4. How large is the service area? What is the total population served ?

From the westerly communities of Sheshegwaning and Zhiibaahaasing First Nations, to the easterly community of Whitefish River First Nation, the total service area is over 100 miles. The U.C.C.M. First Nation communities are geographically spread out over Manitoulin Island and this represents one of our most significant challenges - as it directly impacts repsonse times.

The total population of the U.C.C.M. polie service area is approximately 2000, with the overall total permanent population of Manitoulin Island approximately 11,000. In the summer season, with the added tourist population, the population of the Island as a whole is estimated to double.

5. How many personnel are employed by the police service ?

As at July 2009, the total number of employees (uniform and civilian support) is 24.  This includes the Chief of Police, two Sergeants, a detective constable, a drug officer, a community services officer, and two special constables. For civilian support, the Service employs an Administrator, Court Case Manager, Administrative Assistant, and a Custodian. Guards are employed on an on-call, part time basis only and is not included in the total of 24 staff.

6. Are there other police services on Manitoulin Island ?

Yes, there are two other police services providing service to Manitoulin Island residents. The Wikwemikong Tribal Police provides service to the Wikwemikong Unceded Reserve, and the Ontario Provincial Police provides services to all of the Non-First Nation towns and municipalities located on Manitoulin Island.
