How Do I Obtain A "Police Records Search Certifcate?"

This is sometimes commonly referred to as a “criminal record check”. Typically, this may be requested from a new employer, or a student may require a Certificate to complete a co-op placement in their program of study. This Certificate reports your criminal code convictions, as well as other local incident  involvement which may not have resulted in a criminal code conviction.

**NOTE - AS AT MARCH 2010, CHANGES TO THE CURRENT PROCESS ARE CURRENTLY UNDERWAY - THE FOLLOWING IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE **

1. Can I go to any police station to get my Certificate?

Our Service area is that of the UCCM First Nation Communities. Unfortunately, we cannot process your request if you do not currently reside in one of these communities. It is your place of current residency that determines which police service will be assisting you, as the police service within that area needs to verify their local records as well. It does not matter whether you are a band member of a UCCM community or not.

2. What do I need to bring?

You will need to attend our office in person, and provide two pieces of personal identification – preferably photo ID. Someone else cannot start or initiate the process on your behalf. The reason for this is that your signed consent together with a witness is needed first in order to begin the search. Also, a fee of $20 must be paid at this stage of the process (an exeption is made for (unpaid) volunteer positions).

3. How long will it take to complete?

The length of time to complete your background search depends on your five year address history.  Other police services may need to be contacted to complete your request which may take some additional time.  Depending upon how quickly other Police Services respond to our request on your behalf, this directly affects the amount of time required to complete your background search.

4.  Can the Certificate be mailed to me, or can someone pick it up when completed?

Once the check is completed, you will be contacted to pick it up. You must attend in person in order to sign the certificate of the results found. It cannot be mailed, or another person cannot pick the final results for you, for this reason: another person cannot attest or verify that an entry made on the background search certificate is indeed yours. Your signature is acknowledgment of the findings reported on the background search certificate.

5. Can I get more than one copy?

Yes - there is no extra charge for duplicate copies made at the time when your original search certificate is released to you. The original and any extra copies will be stamped with a seal to indicate each certificate's authenticity.

6. How long is the Certificate valid?

The police serivce itself does not actually determine the period of time that the Certificate is valid. Each requesting agency determines within their own internal policies and timeframes the acceptable time period in which they accept a Certificate. Be sure to check with the requesting agency for any timeline requirements.
