If you're looking for a career in policing with a First Nation Police Service, you've come to the right place! We urge our aboriginal youth and adults to explore this section of our website and to ask us any specific questions that you may have about the Service.
There are many advantages, rewards, AND challenges that come with a career in First Nation policing: typically, communities are smaller and closely integrated, and most everyone knows everyone else within the community; while these are advantages, these can also be challenges too, depending upon the type of policing situation that is encountered. Nevertheless, we beleive that the benefits and rewards of a policing career in First Nation communities far exceed the challenges! As a police officer, you are looked to for advice in many areas, you are a role model within the community, and best of all, you get to work with the public on a daily basis - there is never a dull moment!

With respect to the specific recruiting processes to our Service, once a police officer position with the U.C.C.M. Anishnaabe Police is identified, potential candidates must complete pre-interiew testing from a London, Ontario agency "Applicant Testing Services". This is a standardized process for the selection and recruitment of potential police officers in the province of Ontario which has been implemented to assist all police services in their recruitment strategies. It is referred to as the Ontario Constable Selection System. This process involves a series of various testing areas, which include general aptitude, written communication, physical fitness, behavioral assessment, vision, and hearing. |
Upon successful completion of the ATS requirements, successful candidates are issued an Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) "Certificate of Results". This OACP certificate of results is recognized throughout Ontario by participating police services, and a successful testing result will provide a candidate with the ability to apply to various police services in Ontario.
To be eligible for an interview, a candidate must submit their resume meeting minimum qualifications, their certificate of testing results (OACP Certificate), and a minimum of three references. Note that the results of a candidate's score may be reviewed regardless whether the specified ATS standard has been met: depending on the closeness of the result, a candidate's application may not automatically be disqualified simply for this reason.
Our organization's rationale in utilizing this method and allowing for discretion is that this pre-interview testing phase by ATS is one of many useful tools to help us gauge and predict a candidate's future success at the Ontario Police College. Existing Ontario Police College graduates are not required to complete the pre-interview testing phase by Applicant Testing Services as they have previously attended and received their Constable Training diploma.
Candidates are encouraged to review the pre-determined schedule of testing dates hosted by Applicant Testing Services. Candidates must independently contact ATS to register for a testing session, and to receive a pre-testing package. This package provides the necessary information to prepare for the testing date. (The cost of the ATS testing is the responsibility of the applicant).
The U.C.C.M. Police Services Commission Screening/Hiring Committee will then contact candidates to attend both formal and informal interviews. It is during this process where a candidate's interpersonal skills, confidence, and overall character traits can be seen first hand. The Service believes it is important not only to recruit and select personnel with all the required training and credentials, it is equally important to ensure that a candidate will be a 'good fit' within our organizational culture.
Once an offer of employment is accepted by the candidate, the new police recruit will gain about one week of experience learning about the administration of the Service, and shortly thereafter the recruit will attend the Ontario Police College in Alymer, Ontario for approximately twelve (12) weeks. The new recruit must achieve the prescribed standards of the Ontario Police College in all areas, and must receive their diploma - this is an explicitly stated condition contained in each offer of employment.
The starting salary for a new recruit is $40,476.80 (April 1, 2008).
