On Thursday, October 4, 2018, the UCCM Police along with the OPP and other community-based partners are hosting a one day awareness event focusing on missing and/or unidentified murdered persons.
Topics and presentations will include a personal reflection for one local family, missing persons investigations, community action planning, missing and murdered Indigenous peoples, a family’s guide to the national missing persons DNA program, preventing child sexual abuse, living with grief/unresolved grief, internet safety and human trafficking indicators and candle light vigil.
This event is a Manitoulin Island wide event for all community members.
These can be difficult topics that hit close to home for many. The planning team want to ensure the safety of everyone who chooses to attend by providing the following:
- There will be a private space with Elders, throughout the entire day, for comfort and guidance if things get too heavy for people;
- There will be a sunrise ceremony around 7:00 am;
- A sacred fire will burn for the day;
- To end our day, we will make our offerings to the fire, sing and drum. Hand drummers are asked to bring their drum if they would like to use their voice to support the ones that have been living with a loss such as this; and
- A referral to support services and wellness check if requested.
Food is important and that’s why we will be offering nutritious snacks, a light lunch and hot, catered supper for participants.
Please note, there is no fee for this event. Expenses are also being covered by the sponsoring agencies.
This event is being held in Aundeck Omni Kaning at the 4 Directions Complex.

We are hosting an open house on May 16th, 2018 from 10 am – 2 pm! We will have micro information sessions (5 minutes or less) on policing and from community partners. We are having a BBQ at lunch, a show and shine of fleet vehicles and little fun in the sun!

Manitoulin Island – The UCCM Anishnaabe Police have now implemented a Vulnerable Persons Registry for the UCCMM and Manitoulin Island area. As part of our ongoing commitment to community based policing practices and aligning with Safer Ontario Communities, Ontario Mental Health and Policing Strategy the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service and its policing partners will be implementing the Voluntary Vulnerable Person Registry.
The voluntary vulnerable person registry offers persons within the UCCMM and Manitoulin Island area with cognitive, physical, developmental or intellectual issues to join the new registry which assists police and other emergency services in providing a coordinated and/or modified response when a vulnerable person goes missing, is susceptible to misadventure or is at increased risk in a crisis situation.
The UCCM Anishnaabe Police Services Social Navigator Initiative is the administrative body for the registry. The Social Navigator Initiative works to address high risk situations where mental health, addictions or other socio-economic factors are present and to build bridges between police and community.
The goal of this program is to provide enforcement and other emergency personnel with an additional tool that has the potential to improve the lives of people who are vulnerable and increase positive policing outcomes.
It is recognized that community partners play a vital role in reaching this target group population and that according to best practices, such community based policing initiatives are delivered within varying model components in order to maximize success through positive community outcomes.
