Three charged following death in M’Chigeeng

On February 21, 2026, at approximately 5:00 p.m., UCCM Anishnaabe Police responded to an Ambulance Assist on Nanibozo Street in M’Chigeeng following reports of a male in medical distress.

Officers and paramedics located a 29-year-old male on the roadway. He was transported to the Manitoulin Health Centre, and despite life-saving efforts was later pronounced dead.

On February 22, 2026, UCCM Anishnaabe Police, assisted by the Ontario Provincial Police Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), executed a search warrant at a residence on Mnaawnkwad Drive in M’Chigeeng.

As a result, police seized:

  • Over $30,000 in Canadian currency
  • 6 grams of cocaine
  • 5 grams of fentanyl
  • 2 grams of psilocybin
  • Various ammunition, including 16-gauge, 12-gauge, 20-gauge, .22 calibre rounds, 9mm, .45 calibre, and rifle rounds

As a result of the investigation:

Maria HARE (26 years) is charged with:

  • Manslaughter
  • Trafficking in a Schedule I Substance
  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking

Jesse MIGWANS (27 years) is charged with:

  • Manslaughter
  • Trafficking in a Schedule I Substance
  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (x2)
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order

James MIGWANS (27 years) is charged with:

  • Trafficking in a Schedule I Substance
  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (x2)
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order

All accused were held in custody pending bail hearings.
